NATURAL APPROACH

Theoretical Basis for the Natural Approach
Krashen & Terrell ( 1983)

  • Hypotesis formulation & research valdation of factor in L2 teaching and learning.
  • Applications of theories in bilingual and L2 programs and classrooms.

COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE

CC is the ability to use de language system appropriately
in anycircumstances, with regard to the functions and vari-
eties of languague as well as shared sociocultural suppositions.

THE LEARNING-ACQUISITION
HYPOTHESIS

One acquires or "pick-up" a second language in much the
the same way as one acquired L1, by using it. Formal ins-
tructions is distinct from de acquisition and may be helpful
but is no essential to learning a second language.

THE NATURAL ORDER OF THE ACQUISITION
HYPOTHESIS

Linguistic form emerge in L2 acquisition in much the same order asthey do in L1. This is what make languages assessment possible. It also can into question the
"Grammar Syllabus".

THE MONITOR HYPOTHESIS

As the learner develops skiññs and compentence in L2, s/he
begins to correct and modify his/her speech to conform to
the model speech and written language of native
speakers of the target language.

THE COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT
HYPOTHESIS

The learner can only acquirie or learn language s/he
can understand by connecting it to prior knowledge
and know concepts. Language that is not undestood
is just "L2 noise".

COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT
THE I + 1 FORMILA

Although input must be compreensible, language that
contains forms one level og linguistic complexity
beyond the learner's level provides a challenge
to develop L2 proficiency.

THE AFFECTIVE HYPOTHESIS

Factors of motivation interpersonal acceptance and
self-steem can enhance or limit the speed and
levels of L2 leraned. These include the way the
learner feels toward the native speakers of L2.

THE AFFECTIVE FILTER HYPOTHESIS

There exists a "filter" or "mental block" that impede
L2form "getting in"; a low filter is associated with
relaxation, confidence to take risks and a pleasant
learning enviromment.

INTERLANGUAGE OR L1
HYPOTHESIS

The learner naturally develops an interim form
of language that is a mixture of L1 and L2
because they will "fill in" with the first
language skills where s/he doesn't know
the form in L2.
